Artist Statement
Ella Jimenez’ practice utilizes the aesthetics and techniques of the classical figurative tradition to venerate her subjects. Her paintings combine references to colonial history, art history, mythology, and the literary canon, and through overlapping these references, Jimenez is able to highlight stories that have been erased by imperialism and bring history closer to her audience.
Her 2022-23’ project Untold Stories in Fine Art explored reimagining compositions found in neo-classical figurative painting with moments in colonial history as the setting and revolutionary leaders as the subject matter. This project culminated in a short film documenting her process being shown at the Rochester Institute of Technology in May 2023, though the themes of the series have become a lifelong source of inspiration for her practice.
